Shurland Dale, near Eastchurch on the Isle of Sheppey, provides a fantastic base for exploring the beautiful ‘Garden of England’, as Kent is known, now easily reached across the bridge. You’ll be spoilt for choice with stately homes, a famous brewery and magnificent gardens – perfect days out for the whole family.

Nestling on the famous white cliffs of Dover, St Margaret’s Bay is set in wonderfully manicured grounds. Explore the shops and castle of nearby Dover, travel inland to explore the picturesque Weald of Kent, or take a day trip to Calais for great food and shopping.

Overlooking the mighty River Thames as it reaches the sea, Ashcroft Coast is well placed to explore many of the scenic and historical attractions of Kent. Cross the new bridge over The Swale to visit the famous Canterbury Cathedral or take a day trip over the channel to France where you can enjoy a fine meal and lots of shopping!

Surrounded by picturesque countryside and woodland, Warden Springs has stunning views out to sea. From here you can walk over the hill to the nearby seaside town of Leysdown. Further afield, there’s exploring to be done with castles, museums and the beautiful countryside of Kent all easily accessible across the new bridge over The Swale.

Opposite one of Kent’s finest sandy beaches, Romney Sands is in an area surrounded by the mysterious Romney Marshes, past haunt of smugglers. Take a trip along the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Miniature Railway and enjoy the coastal views. The Park even has its very own station!

Shark tales make bigger headlines, but water pollution is far more common—and a greater threat to humans than the creature depicted in Jaws ever was. In the United States, fouled swimming water is responsible for tens of thousands of beach closings and health advisories every year. Although there is still no uniform federal protocol for testing water quality at beaches, information on water cleanliness at most of the nation's public swimming beaches can be found on the Environmental Protection Agency's site. Outside the United States, however, travellers are largely left to fend for themselves.

Most pollution at swimming beaches is caused by bacteria associated with fecal contamination. Some of these bacteria are harmless, but they are often accompanied by more pernicious pathogens, including E. coli, salmonella, giardia, and enteroviruses that cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and other extremely unpleasant symptoms for the millions of swimmers who are exposed to them every year. Though rare, cholera, hepatitis, and typhoid fever are among the more serious water-borne maladies found at beaches around the world.

In Britain, there's Travelodge and Holiday Inn Express among others. In France there are tons of them dotted all over the country with rooms for three people from less than £20 a night. They're close enough to all the major tourist areas to make it a real viable option for the cost-conscious francophile.

You don't have to pay a fortune or spend years trawling the globe for the hidden gems. Just log on one or more of the travel websites and read the views of previous guests. Remember: cheap doesn't have to mean nasty.
